MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Shamoya McNeil
of the West Virginia University track and field team won the women’s triple jump title on the final day of the 49er Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday.
A dynamic duo of McNeil and sophomore Danique Bryan
put together strong performances in the women’s triple jump to lead the Mountaineers on the final day. West Virginia notched a total of four top-nine finishes on Saturday.
“The triple jump and 800-meter run were strong performances for us,” said coach Sean Cleary. “Overall, I feel as if we are coming home with eight to nine very strong performances. We will only get better as the season progresses.”
Throughout the two-day meet, WVU collected three victories in field events – triple jump, long jump and in pole vault.
First up in field events, McNeil won the women’s triple jump, leaping an outdoor career-best of 12.78 meters. McNeil improved from her previous best by .02 meters, which was set last season. Bryan, a sophomore, posted a runner-up finish with a mark of 12.41 meters.
Rounding a top-four finish, freshman Candace Jones
placed fourth in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:12.67.
In the women’s 3,000 meters, junior Brynn Harshbarger
crossed with finish line in ninth with a time of 10:40.73.
Senior Marseille McBeam
represented WVU in the women’s high jump seeded finals, placing 11th with a mark of 1.60 meters.
The second day ended with the women’s 4x400-meter relay. A Mountaineer team of sophomores Chaqieta Robinson
and Bryan, McBeam and junior Bria Welker
placed 19th with a time of 4:04.29.
Friday’s competition was highlighted by a pair of Mountaineer wins from Bryan and sophomore Madelin Gardner
The first victory for WVU came from the Clarendon, Jamaica, native Bryan, as she jumped a career-best mark of 6.01 meters in the women’s long jump finals.
In the women’s pole vault seeded finals, Gardner won with a mark of 3.90 meters, just .01 meters shy of matching her career best.
The Mountaineers will return to North Carolina the following week, as they gear up for the Raleigh Relays on March 24-25.
